Cell Phones Can Cause Sleep Problems

sleep problemsThere might be a good reason that you’re dozing off at work or school. Recent research is showing that using a cell phone can cause you to lose zzz’s.

In one study, conducted by researchers from Wayne State University and the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, scientists found that radiation equal to that emitted by many cell phones can interfere with deep sleep.

Scientists believe that deep sleep helps your body recover from stress.

Specifically, cell phone users took longer to reach a deep sleep.

And they came out of deep sleep faster than non-cell phone users, which indicates that the radiation was the primary cause for the sleep disturbance.

The research was published in the peer-reviewed journal, Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium.

Another study, this one lead by Dr. Gaby Badre, of Sahlgren’s Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden, shows that compared to teens who used their phone lightly, teenagers who use their phones more than 15 times a day—talking and texting—woke up more during the night.

Additionally, these teens had more trouble falling asleep and more difficulty getting up in the morning.

Moreover, in a study performed by researchers at the Loughborough University Sleep Research Centre in the UK, scientists found that using a Nokia 6310e phone affected sleep.

These researchers discovered that even after turning the phone off of “talk” mode, the brain’s delta waves were influenced to the point that it took the study participants twice as long to fall asleep as normal.

This research supports the evidence that radiation from a cell phone does influence brainwaves, including our alpha waves.
